26th February 2007 - Sports Council supports local organisations

Kintyre Athletics Club and Kintyre Rugby Club are two of the latest organisations to benefit from successful grant applications made to South Kintyre Sports Council for financial help with their clubs.

At meeting of the Sports Council on Monday 29th January 2007, Kintyre Athletics Club were awarded £80 towards the costs of sending some of their local young athletes to the Scottish Finals of in Dundee following their recent success in the West of Scotland Regional Final of the Sports Hall Athletics.  The Sports Council also promised to assist further if the local group qualify for the UK Final in Birmingham in April.

Kintyre Rugby Club were awarded £200 towards the cost of three members (two male/one female attending) attending a 3-day SRU United Kingdom Coaching course in mid February 2007.   This course will allow coaches to deliver lessons in basic rugby as prescribed by the SRU Coaching and Rugby Development Policy.  The development of the coaches will mean that one or two coaches later in the year will go on to the Level 2 course, giving depth to the coaching base which can then go out into Kintyre to promote Rugby and Fitness to the schools and communities.

A spokesperson for the club said “Since the club was reborn in November of last year, the Sports Council has been very proactive in supporting the aspirations of the Rugby Club, and this very kind donation of £200 will go a long way towards paying for the training of the Clubs Coaches.“

Support was also offered to the football community in South Kintyre with the offer of the Mini Bus or the cost of petrol money to attend Argyll and Bute Council’s Football Conference in Oban this week as well as donating £50 towards the costs Debbie Brown recently incurred attending trials with the Scotland team.

Since reforming in April 2006 the Sports Council has financially supported grant applications from Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10k Run, Kintyre Shinty Club, Kintyre Swimming Club, and helped support Peter McCallum to achieve his referee qualification which will support football in the area.  The Sports Council have also actively been supporting various clubs and organisations in the area and been proactive in such projects as their Mini Bus Appeal and the All Weather Surface in Campbeltown.  The local group meet at the Aqualibrium on the least Monday of each month.  To find out more please log on to their website www.southkintyresportscouncil.com
