Strathclyde Police Pipe Band
held its inaugural Junior Solo Piping Competition last
Saturday 24th February. The event was conveniently held at
Smithycroft School, Glasgow, just a stone's throw from
Barlinnie Prison. As ever, Kintyre Schools were well
represented with 11 young pipers from Campbeltown making
the trip. On this occasion the young pipers were supported
and tuned up on the day by tutor, John Brown, Kintyre's
own Strathclyde Police Band member.
As expected, the contest was superbly well organised and
administered by the Police, who had a huge entry of young
pipers from all over Scotland and Ireland to contend with.
Top spot for Kintyre on Saturday went to 14 years old
Keith Cowie who played a great Strathspey & Reel to win
the under 15 years event. Keith was up against 55 other
entrants in that particular event.
Fiona Mitchell, in her under 15 years swan-song, showed a
pleasing return to form by being placed 5th in the March
and 3rd in the Strathspey & Reel.
Fiona moves into the 15 years and over section in her next
contest which will be the Dumbarton & District Solos on
Saturday 3rd March..
Elsewhere Abbie Semple took 2nd place in the Chanter and
Lewis Anderson was placed 4th in the Novice Bagpipes
